Rare Spares New Zealand's History

Rare Spares New Zealand was founded late 1987 and opened for business early 1988 after a buying trip to Australia to stock the shop of 1000sq ft.

At this stage a one man band, Ian King the Company’s owner specialised in wrecking Holdens and performing mechanical work, engine transplants, diff & gearbox modifications, all this and selling the range of  Rare Spares products kept the company busy. The company grew and after 18 months leased the adjoining premises for storage (another 1000sq ft) and added 2 new staff members to help. March 1991 saw the company shift to new premises in Orbell St, Sydenham of 4000sq ft, now with 3 members of the Rare Spares team there was never a dull moment for the team with the frequent trips to Australia buying parts and always expanding the companies inventory and knowledge. Many promotional business trips, displays at car shows, swap meets around New Zealand saw the company continue to grow past the abilities of the current building and staff. Late 1993 Ian King realised that new special premises were required and went looking for the prefect or close to it building for the company to shift into. They were not to be found and a bare block of land was purchased just prior to Xmas. Plans were done in late 1994. The shift was on, which took a team of 11 people and 2 trucks, car trailers etc six weeks to shift. Nov 1st 1994 Rare Spares opened the doors at 9 Coleridge St for business, with 5 staff, new premises 9500sq ft, 1500sq ft of it showroom the company had never looked better.

Now 2002, 8 years on and with a staff of 9 the Rare Spares NZ team has the largest range of products and services available to the New Zealand restorer or street machiner.

The company still wrecks Holdens and Fords of most years and models, from mid 60’s to late 90’s. It holds a huge range of parts for everyday later model family cars to keep your daily driver alive and carries all those super hard to find parts for that resto job, 2 mechanics perform an array of jobs in the workshop, from fitting headlight bulbs to engine overhauls, custom repowers etc.
